We decided at the last minute to just leave tonight rather than stay another night at my parents’ house just to leave early in the morning. It just makes more sense this way. At this moment it’s 12:50 am and we’re somewhere on US 33 in Ohio. Nora sleeps in the back and Mandy is driving and singing along with the Queen CD in the stereo.

We realized that if we left at 5 or 6 in the morning, Nora will have slept all night and then would sleep in the car. We’d be left with an awake baby when we rolled in at 8pm, and we’d have to figure our how to get enough sleep before I went to work at 6 am on Monday. Now we’ll get in around noon with a baby who slept in the car all night. Mandy can take the first sleep shift while I take care of snuggle-butt.

Makes perfect sense, right?

Being with family is great, but there’s a huge disconnect from our everyday lives whenever we’re away for an extended visit. Having Nora around her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins is wonderful, but we also took her away from her familiar routine for a long time.

Coming home is definitely bittersweet.
